Most villa owners start with the app or the brand. The decision that shapes everything after it is how devices connect: wired, wireless, or a mix.
Wired systems: a solid backbone
In wired systems such as KNX, switches, sensors and controllers connect over a dedicated bus cable to a central panel. Best for villas under construction or full renovation: very reliable, long-lived, and it keeps working locally if the internet drops. It needs early planning and costs more upfront.
Wireless systems: flexible and fast
Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi and the newer Matter standard suit existing villas and apartments because no walls need opening. Faster to install, cheaper to start and easy to expand, but they depend on a strong network, and sensor batteries need changing.
The common answer: a smart mix
Many villas use a wired base for lighting, curtains and climate in main rooms, with wireless devices where cabling is hard, all in one app with cameras, intercom and alarm.
- New build or full renovation: wired or hybrid.
- Existing villa or apartment: wireless with strong mesh Wi-Fi.
- Holiday home or rental: simple wireless with remote alerts.
